Dennis Taylor’s All New Pro-Snooker Glasses

Article Written and Posted by Brulimar - 23rd February 2016

At Brulimar, we're delighted to reveal our brand new game-changing sport eyewear frames, created alongside the 1985 snooker legend, and new Brulimar best friend, Dennis Taylor. The new frames are lightweight and modern, complete with additional features made for snooker, pool, billiards, and crown green players alike.

Attributing his famous snooker win to the pair of large square specs that he wore at the time, often referred to as ‘upside down glasses’, Dennis Taylor explains how these spectacles were the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ after frustratingly trying absolutely everything in the eyewear market to solve the problem of looking over the top of his regular glasses.

“I always took off my glasses to play - I had a fair amount of success, but I had pretty poor eyesight. Then, in 1979, I tried some new cutting-edge contact lenses from Germany and almost won the world championship. However, they weren’t right; my astigmatisms made the balls look like rugby balls.”

The process that led to this revolution in eyewear attests to how much optometry has advanced over the past 30 years, which is clear as Taylor reminisces over the day he and Jack Karnehm, a commentator for the BBC, pioneered 'those' frames.

“He got all of his old tools out that he hadn’t used in 40 years and actually made the glasses with proper glass lenses.  They were quite heavy but they worked and I would have never become world champion without them.”

We teamed up with Dennis Taylor to create two models of snooker glasses, utilising modern processes. Both styles are semi-rimless and are available in two colour variations, black and dark gunmetal, with a matt finish to ensure there is no glare off the frame when playing. All frames are complete with an authentic Dennis Taylor signature on the temples as well as a monogrammed case & cloth all beautifully pakaged into an elegant box.

Managing director of Brulimar, Howard Librae, explains how these frames were crafted using premium materials.

“The main aim of the Dennis Taylor frames are to be lightweight, with this in mind the fronts are made from stainless steel which is both strong and light. The sides are made from TR90 which is also very strong and light. Within the sides are built-in soft action spring hinges. We also use silicone pads to ensure maximum comfort and grip. Dennis Taylor's input in terms of the design changes was invaluable in helping us produce what we both believe to be the perfect snooker glasses.”

The extra lens depth, allowed by this cutting-edge frame design, enables optimal view for snooker, pool, billiard and crown green bowling players, regardless of the player's head or eye position

The new line of eyewear has received positive feedback and strong initial sales since its launch in February. Our next stop will be at Optrafair at the NEC Birmingham from April 9 - 11.

You can meet and have a chat with Dennis Taylor who will be available for selfies, photos and autographs at our stand Q60 on the opening day Saturday April 9.
